TFG Unbuttoned: Extra, extra don’t read all about it

08.30.22 | A Grand Island, Nebraska school board has shuttered Saga, the 54-year-old high school newspaper, because it did not like recent content. The staff was reprimanded for using a writer’s preferred pronouns, covering PRIDE, and publishing an editorial against Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law. So much for teaching free speech. Then, California is placing solar panels over canals to save water and energy. Dubbed Project Nexus, should it succeed in the perceived savings of water and money, expect hundreds of miles of canals in California to get the same system. Finally, the $1.34 billion lottery ticket winner has yet to come forward. They have a year to claim the prize, or the winnings go back to the lottery in July of 2023.

Food For Thought

08.24.22 | Shop Talk looks at three food related business stories. Caught My Eye looks at a woman who has filed a lawsuit in Federal Court for being denied a FCANCER license plate. Also, a new book was just released about Crazy Eddie, the northeastern electronics giant, who was forever present on TV in the 80’s. 08.23.22 | Japan wants to increase tax revenue by encouraging the younger generation to drink more. Under a new national campaign, called “Sake Viva!”, the Japanese Government is accepting ideas on how to best launch a marketing campaign to increase alcohol sales and in effect, tax revenue. Cheers! Then, a visitor to Milwaukee gets caught on a draw bridge opening and falls to his death when he could no longer hold on. Finally, a Florida couple is arrested after having sex on the Ferris Wheel at Cedar Point Amusement Park in Ohio.

08.17.22 | Shop Talk covers a prolific vet in Maryland that dispenses pet and home spun quotes and jokes on their sign. Caught My Eye has two stories hotel related. First, Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer converts three rooms at a motel in Traverse City with an 80’s vibe that fits the blue-collar brand. Second, The Liberty Inn is for sale. It is New York City’s last “no-tell-motel.” The “boy-wonder” of drugstores, Justin Dart Sr., is our Business Birthday.

08.16.22 | Anti-LGBTQ hate surged online by 406% following the passage of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law, that limits classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity, a new report finds. “Hetrification” is the act of bachelorette parties taking over gay safe spaces and it is not good according to a recent study. Finally, Fancy Feast cat food brand is sponsoring human dinners in NYC so cat owners can experience the texture, form, and flavor of what their favorite feline is enjoying.

08.10.22 | Shop Talk covers an article from CNN Business regarding an 8-week experiment implementing a 4-day work week. Caught My Eye encourages anyone in San Francisco to go see “The Empire Strips Back” in Chinatown. It is a burlesque performance featuring Star Wars characters. Also, the Candy Funhouse is looking for a Chief Candy Officer or CCO! You must taste 3,500 pieces of candy per month! Leo Fender, famous for the Fender Guitar is our Business Birthday. Finally, John gets an Apple Watch!

TFG Unbuttoned: Ivana gets a hole in one

08.09.22 | Ivana Trump, Ex-Czech, and mother of Junior, Ivanka, and Erik, is buried in Bedminster at Trump National Golf Course. Apparently, there are tax breaks for designating land or parts of property as a cemetery. (If there is a loophole and a way to avoid taxes the Trumps will find it.) Then, Adam Graham, a Mayor in Oklahoma and one of six LGBTQ elected officials in that state resigned for fear of escalating threats against him. Finally, Hershey walked back an earlier “candy shortage” story this week by saying the company is on track to have plenty of goodies on hand for the ghosts and goblins.

08.03.22 | Shop Talk covers an article from CNBC that shares 4 common things that parents never did and yet raised highly successful adults. Caught My Eye looks at Coca-Cola’s Sprite brand reboot and a woman in Mexico who erected a penis statue at her grave. Professional housekeeper, and inside trader, Martha Stewart is our Business Birthday. Happy 81st Martha!

TFG Unbuttoned: DeSantis drags us back to 1947

08.02.22 | Florida Governor Rick DeSantis is upset that parents brought their children to a drag brunch in Miami club R House. DeSantis wants to stop this activity and is using a 1947 court ruling that says men who impersonate women in a suggestive way can be considered a public nuisance. Equality Florida is fighting back. Then, Raul Carbajal left his three-month-old Siberian Husky puppy in the car with his mouth taped shut while he gambled at the Bellagio. It was 113 degrees when police rescued the puppy and arrested Carbajal when his luck ran out. Finally, more and more retailers are locking up everyday goods to stop theft.

Pat Benatar fires her last shot

07.27.22 | Shop Talk reveals Ford Motor Company’s plan to lay off 8,000 salaried workers this year as they switch to electric vehicles. Also, has the country gone tip happy? Caught My Eye let us know that the familiar Staten Island mansion from The Godfather is for rent through Airbnb. Also, Pat Benatar says she will no longer sing one of her top selling songs, “Hit Me with Your Best Shot.” The Rolling Stones have also stopped singing “Brown Sugar,” but Cher will continue dressing like a Cherokee when she sings her hit “Half Breed.”  Allen Breed, the pioneer of automotive airbags is our Business Birthday.
